Calm, Coup, and Collected

As you’re no doubt aware, Thailand is currently in a state of political upheaval.  The military announced that they were taking control of the government last week following months of protests and power-grabs (for more details).

My experience with this, however, is all second or third-hand.  Chachoengsao province is quiet (but not too quiet) and life is going on as usual.  I spent my long weekend exploring my town and making up for the days of not being able to eat.  Saturday included a late lunch, a trip to the large and mildly overwhelming Saturday Market (I bought some sunglasses and some incredibly fresh doughnuts), and amazing noodles for dinner.

Today, Sunday, I slept in and then watched Roman Holiday, followed by a stroll around the park and a trip to Tesco.

Exhausted by my one hour jaunt around town, I lazed the rest of the afternoon away watching Ghostbusters before going out for dinner.  Oh, and what a dinner it was.  I tried the local specialty of Pak Mo, which was broth seasoned to taste with chilies, vinegar, garlic oil and herbs, into which they drop these heavenly paper thin dumplings filled with a host of different things like bamboo shoots, corn, bean sprouts, or green beans, and then they add in some meatballs too. Yum!

I was then enticed to try roti with banana.  It”s similar to a crepe and they pan fry it in butter and then drizzle sweetened condensed milk over the top.  It is the food of the gods.

Classes return as usual tomorrow, so I’ll be spending the week trying to keep up with all of the adolescents.  Then, hopefully, I’ll be traveling next weekend!

Til next time!

I’ll also try the roti with banana… with a little chocolate drizzled on mine!
